Three hours later, we came to the edge of a part of the forest I’d not been in before. I slowed to a walk. When Axel realized I wasn’t beside him, he turned around and came back. He tipped his head to the side and his wolffish ears swiveled on the top of his skull. He nuzzled me.

We were in a territory that didn’t belong to us, and it made my skin prick and my fur stand up. We didn't’ belong there.

A pair of wolves came out of the woods. The ginger leader returned to her woman form. She glanced over her shoulder. “They are here with us. Do not attack.”

The pair lowered their heads and leaned down into a bow. Then they disappeared back into the woods.

We remained as our wolf selves and followed Giselle into the open encampment of canvas tents. Either this pack was more nomadic or had less resources than ours. Either way, tents in Alaska impressed me. Perhaps they had dialed in their ability to not let cold touch them. Maybe a dozen more pack members had reminded behind, but all of them were in various states of injury.

Giselle whistled at me, and I hesitated before we both resumed following her. Being whistled at wasn’t something I enjoyed, but it was tolerable for the sake of answers. At least tolerable today.

We trailed after her, headed toward a tent at the rear of the cluster of dwellings. She opened the flap, and we entered. The low light wasn’t an issue for my wolfish eyes, but I took a seat to wait until I received an invitation to examine the dead. Axel waited beside me.

The situation required respect. This wasn’t my pack, and I wasn’t in charge.

Giselle dismissed one of her pack members. Then she closed the tent flap behind us followed by a half-bow. “Please. Be gentle as you search.”

A dozen human forms laid prone inside the tent, and I shifted to my human form before I knelt beside the closest one. “Thank you for your sacrifice for your pack, most honored dead,” I whispered. It seemed trite as it came from my lips, but I didn’t know what else to say. “I’m sorry.”

Axel remained near the exit. As I made my way from individual to individual, I shook my head. The wounds were more like Lucas’s wounds than the others. Perhaps Lucas had been murdered by a rogue coven rather than a single vampire. When I finished, I turned to Giselle. “Thank you for allowing this.”

The gingery Alpha nodded. “Thank you for treating our dead with the respect due to them. It is not often we allow any to visit our dead.”

“I have a question for you.” I glanced around the tent, trying to think how to word my question in way it wouldn’t be offensive. “Why do you live in tents?”

She studied the ground and then me for several moments before answering. “We are a nomadic pack, so it is our tradition. It is difficult for a pack to leave their traditions behind.
